Collaboration with Guinea
| Surveillance and Research Project on Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers (Lassa, Ebola, Yellow Fever). Prospective studies on the T-cell immunity to Lassa virus in the framework of the VHF surveillance in Guinea. The "VHF Surveillance and Research Project"is a EU-funded program to investigate and monitor viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHF) in two endemic West African countries, namely the Republic of Guinea (RG) and the Ivory Coast (CI). Aim of the project is the implementation of diagnostic facilities for VHF in Conakry and Abidjan and the conduction of studies on the prevalence and incidence of Ebola, Yellow fever and Lassa fever, which are endemic in certain parts of RG and CI. The project is coordinated by EPICENTRE (Groupe Europeen d'Expertise en Epidemiologie d'Intervention), Paris, France. Project partners are the Institut Pasteur, Paris; the Institut Pasteur, Abidjan; the Bernhard Nocht Institute, Hamburg and the Institute for Virology, University Marburg. Collaborations within the project exist with the Level 4 program, Winipeg and the Institut Pasteur, Dakar. In the Republic of Guinea, the national project was named "Projet de Recherche sur les Fièvres Hémorragiques en Guinée (PFHG)". A laboratory for working with dangerous viral pathogens was installed at the University of Conakry and approved by the Ministry of Health. In RG, the VHF studies are extended to investigate the cellular immunity against Lassa virus in prospective studies of symptomatic and asymptomatic Lassa fever cases.
